Trail Overview

Montoso Peak is the furthest motorized trail in this area and runs a full loop of the Montoso Peak base. Because of its path, it features several obstacles that most 4X4 and high-clearance AWD vehicles will enjoy completing. The loop begins on a primarily dirt surface that has some deeper rutting, sections of off-camber ruts, and soft dirt, as well as some silt beds. A majority of the trail provides room to pass if traffic is present with only a few sections where brush or terrain causes the main two-track to narrow to single vehicle width only. There are several low-lying washes located through the trail that have the potential to become shallow water crossings after wet weather. These washes vary in terrain type from sand to rocks or a combination of the two, with a couple of them having short-grade ascents or descents when entering or exiting depending on the direction choice of the loop. There is a section of larger rocks that offers a double line choice for vehicles that don't have the necessary clearance to traverse the 14" rocks. Cell service is moderate at the north, east, and south areas of Montoso Peak with service dropping on the west end behind the mountain. In the few areas where the trees are clear and the elevation is right, the views of the surrounding mountains are wide and give a great glimpse of the surrounding scenery.
