Trail Overview

Crosby Canyon is located just west of the Village of Datil, NM, and connects Highway 60 to Highway 12 and can be run from either direction. Starting from the Highway 60 side the trail begins on a well-maintained section of the road before turning to a more primitive surface then back to being well-maintained closer to Highway 12. Surface changes throughout the track from dirt to a combination of rock and dirt with some of the rocks being loose. Some light rutting is present and areas showing signs of erosion with one spot of erosion that is beginning to impede on the trail and should be driven towards the outside and taken slowly. The trail will be suitable for most AWDs as there are no obstacles larger than 10" but the few steeper grade areas will be difficult for anything not AWD or 4WD with the loose surface and there are a few areas that have the potential to be shallow water crossings after rain or snow melt. The trail is primarily single-vehicle wide with room to pass with the exception of a few short sections being narrow due to erosion or foliage. Views are wide open in some areas giving clear views of the Sugarloaf, Anderson, and Crosby mountains. Cell service is excellent throughout the route with only a small area having weak service. There are several spurs along the route and only a couple of small sections of private land on the eastern end near Highway 12.
