Trail Overview

Lined with thick trees and large rock formations within the tree lines, the Big Rock trail loops the mountain's base with a good diversity of terrain. The trail is primarily dirt that can be extremely muddy after rain or snow melt and can have areas of standing water and mud holes. Scattered throughout the trail are sections of rock beds and some loose rocks that can be up to 12 inches in size, but should be easy to traverse for most high clearance 2WD and AWD vehicles. The dense trees and other foliage through the area make the trail a single vehicle width, but most of the trail is wide enough to pass any traffic. Several sections along the route have some significant ruts, with some being slightly off-camber, a few leading down into small shallow washes, and a couple going up shallow grade hills. While there are no substantial obstacles to tackle along the trail, dispersed camping is permitted along the entire route, and an abundance of open areas tucked into the tree lines provide spots for peaceful and secluded camping. Cell service is weak in the region, with the strongest in the trail's northeast and east end.

Difficulty

There are no major obstacles along the trail but there can be loose rocks up to 12" in size that occasionally impeded on the track. There is some rutting present that can be up to 14 inches in depth in sections as well as some slightly off-camber sections of the trail over loose gravel. The area is prone to shallow mudholes and sandy washes that tent to hold water, but nothing in excess of 10 inches in depth.
