Trail Overview

Bear Scat is an intermediate single track with several rock ledge obstacles. Bear Scat starts on the south end from a large dirt staging area off of Juan Tomas Road with plenty of places to park. The first 1.5 miles of the trail going north is super easy, of a 2 difficulty. It goes through grassy meadows and wooded sections, on a smooth, somewhat curvy track, with banked corners and hardly any rocks. Once it gets near Poker Chip, it starts to go up a gully with a few small rock ledges. From the intersection with Poker Chip, Bear Scat continues climbing up through a ravine with big boulders. Some of the boulders you can go around, but some you have to go through. The trail goes up 6 or so switchbacks that are not very difficult. The switchbacks are rounded, so not too tight, and don't have any actual obstacles on the insides of the turns. The rock obstacles occur between the switchbacks. One is like a jagged spine of rocks running vertically through the trail that you have to go over. Most of the obstacles are like big stair-steps, sometimes with roots as well. The northern section of Bear Scat north of Pinyon is an easy dirt trail that is fast and flowy with no obstacles.
