Trail Overview
Dry Canyon Alternate is a "spicy" and engaging route that offers a more technical experience than the primary canyon roads. Right from the start, the trail demands your attention with a series of quick drops, sharp climbs, and tight, narrow turns. The environment is beautifully varied; you will transition from the cool, shaded canopy of dense Utah Juniper and Pinyon Pine forests into expansive, sun-drenched sagebrush meadows. This trail is a visual treat for those who enjoy the "Basin and Range" scenery. Each time you crest a hill, the terrain reveals a new, picturesque vista stretching for miles across the Reese River Valley. However, the driving is as focused as the views are vast. You will navigate several off-camber sections and deep ruts where precision is key. The trail also features rocky segments where careful line choice is required to protect your tire sidewalls from sharp volcanic rock. There is no cell service on this trail. The deep canyon folds and high ridges block all signals. Download offline maps before leaving the Austin area.

Difficulty
Rated a 3 due to the frequency of off-camber tilts, rocky obstacles, and narrow passages. Experience in picking lines through rock and ruts is beneficial. The combination of tight, narrow turns through the trees and technical, off-camber sections makes this trail best suited for smaller, more nimble vehicles like Jeeps, mid-size trucks, or UTVs.
History
The "Dry Canyon" name is a common but literal one in Nevada, where water is the most precious commodity. While the silver boom of 1862 brought thousands of people to the nearby hills of Austin, canyons like this one were primarily used by woodcutters. In the 1800s, the silver mills required massive amounts of fuel to process ore, and "carbonari" (charcoal burners) would comb these pinyon-juniper forests to provide the charcoal that powered the "Silver Queen" of the desert.
