Trail Overview

The Broad Canyon Bypass is a delightful trail that traverses the mid-elevation foothills of the Toiyabe Range. This route is exceptionally well-maintained, with a wide, graded dirt surface that provides a smooth, comfortable cruising experience. As the road rolls up and over the undulating foothills, you are treated to breathtaking views in every direction. The jagged, commanding silhouette of Wildcat Peak dominates the horizon across the valley, while expansive vistas stretch endlessly to the north and south. This trail serves as a strategic "launchpad," providing quick, easy access to a variety of smaller, more technical two-track trails that branch into the rugged canyons above. As you navigate this route, you will pass the historic Kingston Cemetery, a poignant landmark that tethers the trail to the region's deep pioneer roots. The bypass is the preferred connector for those traveling from the town of Kingston over toward the Bowman Creek Trail, which leads explorers alongside Clear Creek and up into the industrial ruins of the Bowman Mine area. Because this is a well-maintained connector, stay alert for other travelers, including ranching vehicles and local residents. There is no cell service on this trail. The surrounding foothills and high ridges block all signals. Download offline maps before leaving the town of Kingston.

History

The Broad Canyon Bypass traces a path through the very heart of the 19th-century silver rush territory. The town of Kingston was a bustling hub in the 1860s, and the nearby Kingston Cemetery serves as the final resting place for many of the miners, ranchers, and families who built this community. Many of the headstones tell stories of the "Silver Kings" and the "Carbonari" alike.
