Trail Overview

This is a delightful out-and-back trail that offers a smooth and scenic transition from the vast valley into the high-altitude forests of the Toiyabe Range. The journey begins with well-graded, fast sections through the sagebrush. As you enter the mouth of the canyon, the track transforms into a narrow but remarkably high-quality roadbed of compacted gravel. A durable legacy of the significant mining operations that once thrived here. As you climb, the landscape shifts from desert scrub into a dense and aromatic canopy of Pinyon Pine and Utah Juniper trees. This route is an excellent choice for those seeking a quiet mountain escape, quickly into the canyon. You'll find an offshoot trail leading toward Boyd Spring, alongside several small, flat clearings that serve as ideal spots for a secluded dispersed camp. The trail culminates deep in the range at the historic Dollar Mine site. Be advised that the final segment of the trail follows the typically dry bed of Boyd Creek and becomes exceptionally narrow with low-hanging branches. While there is room to turn around at the mine, the tight navigation makes the last section of this trail best suited for narrow-body vehicles or OHVs. Several small, scenic Dispersed camping spots are available early in the canyon near the Boyd Spring turnoff. These provide better level ground and easier access than the sites further up. Expect zero cell service once you enter the canyon. The surrounding ridges and thick timber create a total signal dead zone. Download offline maps before leaving the Highway 376 area.

Difficulty

Suitable for most high-clearance SUVs and 4x4 vehicles. Rated a 2 for its smooth surface, but the difficulty for full-size vehicles lies in the narrowness. Expect unavoidable contact with branches if you push all the way to the Dollar Mine.

History

Boyd Canyon is a testament to the engineering of the 19th-century miners. The high-quality compacted gravel road you drive today was meticulously maintained over a hundred years ago to allow heavy teams of mules to haul silver and lead ore from the Dollar Mine down to the mills.
