Trail Overview

Gaston Road is a scenic trail that runs primarily north-south near the western border of the Bessey Ranger District of the Nebraska National Forest and Grassland (near Halsey, NE). Although there are occasional reminders that the surface was once asphalt, the road surface varies between sand, gravel, and dirt. Winding through open sandhills, the Gaston Road provides access to a variety of recreational opportunities, including hiking, camping, and wildlife viewing. There is also access to several other trails in the 141-square-mile Bessey Ranger District.

Difficulty

Although there are a few rutted and washed-out areas, the road is passable with minimal experience in any off-road vehicle.

History

Gaston Road provides for a western entrance to the Nebraska National Forest - Bessey Ranger District, and connects Nebraska Highway 2 with Circle Road - the main loop around the 141-square mile/90,000-acre forest and grassland.

Access Description

The trailhead is located 1.6 miles east of the gas station/truck stop on the east edge of Thedford, NE, and 12.4 miles west of the main entrance into the Nebraska National Forest - Bessey Ranger District just west of Halsey, NE.
