Trail Overview

Burnt Ridge Trail is a short trail that can confuse what vehicles are allowed on it. OnX shows this trail is open to high clearance 4x4, ATV, and Dirtbike. However, when you reach the beginning of the trail splitting off Hart Bench Loop Connector Trail, you will find dirt piled up on both edges of the trail where only a 50-inch vehicle or less could fit through. Although there are no signs at either end of this trail designating which cars are allowed, the Bitterroot National Forest Motor Vehicle Use Map shows this trail is only open to wheeled vehicles 50 inches wide or less. As far as the trail's condition goes, it is in pretty good shape. Besides the typical shallow ruts, a small number of potholes, and sections of small rocks for trails in this area, this trail is mostly a smooth, sandy/fine gravel surface. A few half switchbacks are sharp and narrower than the rest of the trail due to tree and bush overgrowth. There is also an odd, very short, steep climb at the very south end of this trail, where you will join two other trails as soon as you climb. Along this trail, you will be mainly in trees, so there aren't any good views of the valley from here.
