Trail Overview

This trail transitions into a one-way route near the Skull Crawl area, so pay close attention to signage to avoid going the wrong direction. It's primarily a dirt-based path that winds through a heavily wooded area, offering a peaceful ride through the trees. Some sections of the trail have overgrowth, which means pinstriping is likely, especially for wider vehicles. Along the way, you'll encounter a few shallow puddles, especially after rainfall, but they tend to have a solid bottom and are easy to drive through. There are no major obstacles, making this trail suitable for most 4WD vehicles with moderate clearance.

It's mostly dirt with shallow puddles that have solid bottoms. Some narrow sections with overgrowth may cause light pinstriping. The route becomes one-way near Skull Crawl, so pay attention to the signs. No major obstacles are present, and most 4WD vehicles will handle it easily.

History

The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
