Trail Overview

The Pequaywan/Brimson Trail connects Camp 26 Truck Trail with Northeast Grade Road, offering a route that begins gently but grows increasingly challenging as it progresses. Starting from the Northeast Grade Road side, the trail winds through birch and aspen forest--narrow in places but generally smooth and enjoyable. A few small clearings appear before the forest shifts into denser pine, where the character of the trail changes dramatically. From this point, the track becomes tighter, rougher, and more overgrown, with stretches of loose rock, deep mud pits, and off-camber ruts. Several open sections provide brief relief, but the terrain remains demanding. One notable stretch includes a long water crossing roughly three feet deep, and in some areas, the trees close in so tightly that avoiding paint scratches is nearly impossible. As the trail nears Camp 26, it crosses a narrow bridge that seems better suited for ATVs and side-by-sides. The approach is heavily overgrown, and the bridge's load-bearing capacity is questionable for full-size 4x4s. Before reaching it, a fork in the route offers alternate connections back to Camp 26, allowing drivers to choose a path based on vehicle size and experience level. There are no formal campgrounds or amenities along this trail--no restrooms, potable water, or waste disposal. Cell reception is limited or nonexistent. While dispersed camping is generally permitted within the Superior National Forest (outside the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness), always confirm current regulations with local authorities. Travelers should be fully self-sufficient and follow Leave No Trace principles to help preserve this rugged and beautiful area.

Difficulty

This trail is not regularly maintained, but it appears to be used by other off-roaders, which helps keep the forest from encroaching on the trail.
