Trail Overview

This trail is primarily composed of well-graded gravel and generally offers a smooth ride, although there are occasional bumps and mild corrugations to be aware of. A single-lane wooden bridge crosses a creek along the route and imposes an axle weight limit of 4,000 pounds, so heavier vehicles should avoid using it. The trail provides access to a boat launch on Shannon Lake, with a small parking area adjacent to the launch. However, the launch site is in poor condition, eroded and uneven, so it should be approached with caution, especially when towing a trailer. The road winds through dense, green forest that comes alive with wildflowers in June. Toward the end of the trail, it passes a single private residence before reconnecting with a paved road. A few narrow side trails lead further into the forest. There are no formal or dispersed camping opportunities here, and visitors should not expect amenities such as drinking water, trash facilities, or consistent cell coverage.

History

Superior National Forest was established in 1909 by President Theodore Roosevelt to protect the region's watersheds and natural resources after years of heavy logging and mining. The area has long been home to the Ojibwe people, who continue to maintain cultural ties to the land. In 1978, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness within the forest was given added protection, making it one of the most visited wilderness areas in the U.S. today.
