Trail Overview

This trail features a mixed rock and dirt base, offering a moderately challenging ride that changes with the weather. In dry conditions, it provides solid traction and a relatively stable surface. However, when wet, the dirt sections can quickly turn to slick mud, making the trail more difficult to navigate. The route connects directly to Rock Bottom and briefly runs parallel to On the Rocks, offering access to other key trails in the area. Scattered boulders are found throughout, adding a bit of variety and requiring some line awareness. In one section, there is a downed tree lying across the trail. While it may look intimidating at first glance, it has been driven over many times and is packed down enough that most vehicles can clear it without issue.

Difficulty

This is a moderate trail with changing conditions depending on the weather. The dirt and rock base stays manageable when dry, but quickly becomes slick and muddy after rain, which can make even mild sections more challenging. Boulders are scattered throughout the trail, adding some mild technical spots that require basic line choice. One downed tree lies across the route, but it's been driven over enough that most rigs can pass without issue. While not overly difficult, this trail keeps you on your toes, especially in wet conditions.

History

The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
