Trail Overview

Powers Lake Trail is a narrow, two-track gravel route accessed from Tom Lake Road, leading toward Puddle Lake. The trail surface is rocky and uneven, with frequent potholes, puddles, and a series of steep ascents and descents. While the terrain is rough in places, the trail can generally be driven at a comfortable pace. Winding through forested surroundings, the route passes several private residences and eventually reaches an overgrown ATV trail. At this point, the trail name changes on most maps, and the road surface deteriorates noticeably. Beyond the name change, the route becomes wetter, rockier, and lacks any clear maintenance. Drivers should be cautious, particularly on weekends, as local traffic is common. The trail does not include any designated campsites and is without basic amenities such as potable water or trash disposal. Cell phone reception may be inconsistent or unavailable in this area.

History

Grand Portage, known to the Ojibwe as Gichi Onigaming ("Great Carrying Place"), has been a vital trade route for centuries and later became a fur trade hub before being preserved as a monument co-managed with the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. Today, visitors can explore the historic depot and portage trail, hike to waterfalls and overlooks, enjoy cultural events like Rendezvous Days, and venture into the surrounding state forest or even Isle Royale.
