Trail Overview

This trail is a well-maintained surface of fine gravel. It can become slippery when wet, so caution is advised. The route is fairly long and alternates between sections wide enough for two vehicles and narrower stretches suited for single-vehicle passage. It runs between forested areas and open fields, with cattle often visible along the way and scenic pastures adding to the rural character of the drive. The trail ends at Moose River Road, where the Wapiti East Hunter Walking Trail provides foot access into a nearby Wildlife Management Area. This hiking trail begins within a private driveway, so visitors should be mindful of property boundaries when accessing it. The route itself does not provide any dispersed or formal camping opportunities, nor are there amenities such as trash disposal or a water supply. Cell service may be limited in some areas, so planning ahead is recommended before traveling.

This forest trail is well-maintained and used daily by residents and adventurers. The route is wide and clear of debris, with established tread and minimal overgrowth, making it ideal for a smooth and scenic drive.

History

The Wapiti WMA is part of the broader Beltrami Island State Forest, characterized by its diverse ecosystems, including forests, wetlands, and peat bogs. These habitats support a variety of wildlife species, including elk (also known as wapiti), which are native to the area. The presence of elk is significant, as they were historically abundant in Minnesota but were extirpated from the state in the late 1800s.
