Trail Overview

This trail features a primarily dirt base and weaves through terrain that includes several sizable mud holes. While most of these mud holes can be bypassed, one in particular stands out as especially deep and unpredictable--it's even marked with caution signs on both ends to alert drivers. That specific hole appears to have no firm bottom, making the bypass a safer and smarter choice. Aside from these muddy sections, the trail doesn't present any significant obstacles or technical features. It's generally manageable for vehicles with moderate to high ground clearance and suitable tires, especially for those prepared to navigate around water-filled sections.

Difficulty

The primary challenge on this trail comes from its large mud holes, one of which is deep enough to require a marked bypass. While the trail lacks technical rock obstacles or steep climbs, wet conditions and standing water may pose traction issues. Most high-clearance vehicles should handle it well, especially if drivers utilize available bypasses. Caution is advised around deeper mud pits.

History

The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
