Trail Overview

This is a hardcore out-and-back rock bouncer trail that's built to test both your rig and your resolve. Right out of the gate, the trail hits you with a steep climb on loose rock, requiring momentum and throttle control. But that's just the warm-up. After the first corner, the trail throws down, boulders up to 4 feet tall, scattered across uneven terrain that shifts under your tires. Tire placement is critical, and large tires with solid sidewalls are highly recommended. Recovery gear, including a winch, is essential. At the top, there's only a tight space to turn around before tackling the same gnarly route in reverse, arguably even more difficult on the way down.

Difficulty

Extreme. This out-and-back route is tailored for highly built rock bouncers and is not suitable for stock or lightly modified vehicles. The steep entry climb on loose rock sets the tone, leading into a chaotic stretch of massive, unstable boulders requiring oversized tires and precise throttle control. Limited turnaround space at the end means you'll have to descend the same brutal terrain you just conquered, this time in reverse. Recovery gear is mandatory, and rollovers or breakage are real possibilities.

History

The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
