Trail Overview

This trail features a moderately steep hill climb that serves as the primary challenge on the route. The climb requires steady throttle control and decent traction, especially if the ground is loose or wet. Once you reach the top, the trail transitions into a more relaxed ride, weaving through a wooded section with several narrow passages between trees. While there are no major obstacles beyond the initial hill climb, full-size vehicles may need to take their time navigating the tighter spots. After recent rainfall, expect to encounter mud puddles scattered along the way, some of which can become slick or slightly rutted. Overall, it's a great trail for drivers looking for a mild adventure with just a hint of technical challenge.

Difficulty

This is a light to moderate trail with one main obstacle, a moderately steep hill climb that requires steady throttle and traction, especially when wet. Once you're past the climb, the rest of the trail settles into a smoother, tree-lined route with some tight squeezes that may require careful maneuvering for full-size rigs. There are no technical rock features or steep drop-offs, but recent rain can introduce mud puddles that make certain sections a bit slick.

History

The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
