This trail functions as a critical connector for non-highway legal off-road vehicles, acting like a frontage road that allows access to fuel without ever needing to drive on pavement. Designed with convenience in mind, it gives riders a legal and safe way to reach the gas station in town without risking a ticket or having to load their machine onto a trailer. The route is relatively easy with no major obstacles, making it accessible for most vehicles. However, it does require crossing three public roads. Riders should proceed cautiously and respectfully at these crossings to ensure continued access for all users in the future.

Difficulty

This trail poses no technical challenges and is accessible for all vehicle types. Its main purpose is functional, providing non-street-legal machines with a safe, off-pavement way to access fuel in town directly from the OHV area. While the terrain is simple, riders must be alert at the three public road crossings. Courteous and cautious behavior is essential to maintain long-term access.

History

The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
