Trail Overview

This trail features a dirt and rock surface and is very beginner-friendly, making it a great choice for those who are new to off-roading or looking for a relaxed drive. The terrain is generally flat and easy to navigate, with no technical obstacles to worry about. As you follow the route, it leads you to a popular part of the park known as the Mud Run Area, where several designated mud pits provide a fun place to test your rig or simply watch others take on the challenge. The trail splits into two paths before reaching the Mud Run Area, but both routes ultimately lead to the same open play area.

Difficulty

This is an entry-level trail designed with accessibility in mind. The surface is a mix of dirt and loose rock, but it stays smooth and manageable throughout, making it ideal for first-timers and stock vehicles. There are no major obstacles, steep climbs, or tight technical sections to navigate. It's a laid-back route that serves more as a scenic access road than a challenge. The real action lies at the end--where you'll reach the Mud Run Area, a popular spot for mudding and spectating. Easy to follow and forgiving in nature, this trail is perfect for easing into the off-road scene.

History

The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
