Trail Overview
This trail is a mild and scenic route suitable for most off-road vehicles, including those with minimal modifications. The terrain is primarily dirt-based with a few scattered mud puddles that can form after rainfall, adding some light variability without posing serious challenges. Some sections feature overgrown brush and tree limbs that may cause minor pinstriping, particularly on wider vehicles. Despite these minor inconveniences, the trail remains easy to navigate and is perfect for a relaxing drive. The highlight of the route is the overlook at the end, offering a beautiful panoramic view of Deep Lake, an ideal spot to take a break, snap some photos, or enjoy a quiet moment.
Difficulty
This route poses little technical challenge and is well-suited for stock 4x4s. Drivers should be mindful of occasional mud puddles and minor overgrowth that could lead to light pinstriping. No significant obstacles are present, and the trail remains manageable even for beginners.
History
The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
