Trail Overview
NFS 6097 is a classic Michigan two-track located in the Manistee National Forest, near East Monroe Road and North 168th Avenue. The trail is easy to access and begins at the edge of farm fields, lined with an impressive row of towering pine trees. The route starts relatively wide, with minimal overgrowth or tight tree spacing, but narrows significantly toward the end. About 0.2 miles in, you'll encounter a deep mud hole--use caution here, as it can become heavily rutted depending on recent weather. Continuing along, the trail eventually intersects with NFS 6099/6098/6100, where you'll find a large mud pit. It's easy to bypass, but if you choose to drive through it, be prepared--conditions can become challenging quickly. Like many Michigan trails, conditions vary greatly with the weather. Recent rainfall can lead to deeper mud, washouts, and downed trees, so come prepared. Most of the trail is single-vehicle width with limited opportunities to pass. As you near the end at Winter Road, the trail tightens further with more overgrown vegetation. It finishes in a small turnaround loop that offers a great view of the surrounding horizon. There's also a large tree worth checking out and a simple bench made from logs. Aside from the mud sections, this is not a particularly difficult trail. Regardless of conditions, it's a scenic and enjoyable route with plenty to offer. As always, please tread lightly and respect public lands and nearby private property to help preserve access for future generations.
