History

The Haywire Grade ORV Trail in Michigan's Upper Peninsula has a rich history tied to logging and rail transportation. Originally a rail line called the Manistique & Lake Superior Railroad, it was built in the late 1890s to haul timber to mills in Manistique. The nickname "Haywire" is believed to stem from the railroad's reportedly low budget construction, possibly using haywire to secure materials according to a book about the trail. In 1970, it became Michigan's first rail-trail, converting the old rail line into a recreational pathway
