Trail Overview
Black Mountain is USFS road #274 and includes the road Twenty-mile Leonia which is USFS road #408; it is a moderately used gravel road in the Kaniksu National Forest near Naples, Idaho. The route has a mostly easy grade with some mild inclines near the top of Black Mountain. The route is subject to downed trees and washouts, though the road is frequently maintained due to the large amount of communications equipment stationed at the top of Black Mountain. The route is heavily forested with evidence of logging activity, and Larch trees are the primary new growth here. The area has some hunting activity, and deer, elk, grouse, bear, and mountain lion are present. There is little to no cell phone reception, though there is some connectivity to HAM radio users through the Bonner's Ferry repeater. There are no campgrounds or bathrooms and few pullouts for dispersed camping, many ancillary roads off the main route are gated. There are fantastic views from the top of Black Mountain and Clifty Mountain trailhead branches off near the top of the route. Other routes east of this go to the Yaak area near Libby, Montana

Difficulty
The route is primarily easy but has a few steeper places and shelf road sections. There is typically some access during the winter months due to maintenance crews that need to access the equipment at the top.
