Alexander Hollow Trail

Trail Overview

Alexander Hollow Trail in the Jacob Franklin Alexander tract of Sprewell Bluff Wildlife Management Area follows a canopy below the ridgeline in the scenic foothills. This 2.5-mile out-and-back gravel and dirt route has little rutting and washouts along the route, with some ridge grass growth along the center of the trail. A short spur is also included that crosses a stream to a secluded creek-side primitive campground called "Devil's Backbone Campground" that offers several spots for either rig or tent camping located in well-marked sites alongside Pigeon Creek with a game hanging area a short distance up from the campground. The trail dead-ends at a gate marked "foot traffic only beyond this point" on a gate.

Difficulty

Very little rutting and washouts with some ridge grass growth in the center of the trail. Use caution and avoid idling on the trail while in heat and dry weather to avoid fire. Weather can cause terrain changes near the camping area due to water crossing, being mostly dirt, and the year-round canopy gives this section of the trail an entirely different terrain from the main tract.

History

Sprewell WMA was developed in the 1970's and is known for deer and turkey hunting, along with being a great sight for birdwatching due to the abundance of bird migration.
