Trail Overview

Star Wars is a wash trail in the Hardscrabble Trail system near Gypsum, Colorado. It is aptly named Star Wars since riding at the bottom of a curvy wash resembles the feeling of flying fast through a scene in Star Wars. The wash is at the bottom of a ravine surrounded by tall dirt walls with quick, tight curves. It crosses a couple of unmarked intersections in the beginning but stays in the wash. The wash is sandy with loose rocks and some small rock ledges, but mostly easy. There are banked walls that are really fun to get some speed on, and unique sections with tall vertical dirt walls surrounding you. This cool trail is scenic and different from the rest of the trails in the OHV system. It climbs out of the wash at an unmarked intersection onto a sagebrush ridge line. It gets curvier in the pinyon pine trees like the Maze trail. It goes between tight trees, with tight curves on a mostly smooth dirt surface. It goes over a few roots and rocks but is mostly easy. It ends at the intersection with Elk Drop.

Difficulty

Overall an easy and fun trail with tight curves in the wash. It's best to use a GPS track to know when to exit the wash and climb up the ridge line.

Access Description

The Hardscrabble Trail System is located at the Gypsum exit from I-70 on the south side of the highway, off of Spring Creek Rd. There is a small staging area and several dispersed camp sites on the BLM land. Most of the trails in the area are of easy to moderate difficulty, and can probably all be ridden in a day. This trail system is seasonally open from 4/16 - 11/30, because the trails go from low desert sage brush to higher alpine, so have potential for snow in early spring and late fall. This is a great riding area for a day trip from Denver, or an afternoon ride for the locals.
