Trail Overview
Mule Mountain is a longer and more challenging ATV trail in the San Juan National Forest. The entire 7.5 miles is one long descent from north to south. The north end starts on Devil Mountain Road as a wide path through aspens and pines with some embedded rock, some muddy ruts, and lots of cut logs, so there's always potential for new downfall. The very beginning is pretty easy, but it gets harder and narrows up when it starts to descend steeply with more rock in the downhill. You ride over big slabs of embedded rock, small boulders, and softball-sized loose rocks, with sticks and small logs in the trail too that you have to watch out for. As it drops down to lower elevations, it has fewer rocks. The trail crosses Devil Mountain Road again and continues descending, through steep loose spots and rocky corners, until it ends at the road again. Overall it's a pretty fun ride with a bit more of a challenge, going through a scenic forest. This area is popular for hunters in the fall and is open 5/15 - 11/30 for motorized use.
