Trail Overview

Lunar Express is a fun, tight, and twisty adobe trail in the Flat Top - Peach Valley Recreation Area. There are almost 100 miles of trail in this recreation area and many of the adobe trails are very similar, with steep hill climbs to get on the ridge lines on top of the adobe hills, and steep descents back to the valleys below. This trail is similar to the rest of the trails in the recreation area but has some of the easier hill climbs compared to other ridge trails starting from the Elephant Skin staging area. The hill climbs and descents of this trail are less steep and more gradual. There's still a drop-off on either side of you at times when on the ridge lines, so these trails aren't easy for those scared of heights. This trail goes through a cool grey soil landscape that feels very lunar. There's an offshoot from the main trail that descends back to the valleys from halfway up one of the ridge lines. Keep following the main trail to tee up with Lunar Ridge, another fun ridgeline trail with some very steep climbs. This trail is short but has a scenic view of the hill climbing on the fins of the hill to the side of you when on one of the skinny ridge lines.

Access Description

The Flat Top Peach Valley Recreation Area is a 9,700 acre trail system made up of adobe hills and rocky desert mesas with almost 100 miles of trail, and a couple open riding areas. The main staging areas are Flat Top, Peach Valley, and Elephant Skin Road, but all trails can be accessed from all staging areas. This is a highly trafficked area, especially on weekends, and has lots of blind corners around the adobe hills. It's best to visit in spring and fall to avoid the summer heat and winter snow. There is several days worth of riding here, and it's easy to make a loop of your desired length since all the trails are relatively short and connect easily.
