Trail Overview

The Fast Times trail is a short trail in the Hardscrabble trail system near Gypsum, Colorado. It starts as a fast and straight trail, then intersects with the south end of the Star Wars trail, then goes into the trees in windier curvy terrain like the Maze trail. The trail goes between tight pinyon pine trees, with tight turns, low branches, and trees pinches. It has small climbs and descents. You'll find more rock here than on some of the other trails in the system since there are small loose rocks in the trail and roots on the climbs. Overall it's still a relatively easy trail with good shade coverage in the trees, but made more difficult by lots of brake bumps, roots, and pretty steep sections. It ends at an intersection with Tick Alley. This is one of the moderate difficulty trails in this system. It is easier than the Plunge and the Ledge, of similar difficulty to Tick Alley, and more difficult than Easy Rider and Star Wars. Ride this trail as part of a bigger loop with many of the other single track trails in the area. This is a multi-use trail and you are likely to see other riders and mountain bikers.

Access Description

The Hardscrabble Trail System is located at the Gypsum exit from I-70 on the south side of the highway, off of Spring Creek Rd. There is a small staging area and several dispersed camp sites on the BLM land. Most of the trails in the area are of easy to moderate difficulty, and can probably all be ridden in a day. This trail system is seasonally open from 4/16 - 11/30, because the trails go from low desert sage brush to higher alpine, so have potential for snow in early spring and late fall. This is a great riding area for a day trip from Denver, or an afternoon ride for the locals.
