Trail Overview

This gorgeous route starts at a staging area and immediately enters the San Juan National Forest. It climbs through scrub oak and ponderosa terrain before reaching large aspen glades on both sides of the road. The ride leads towards the majestic Helmet Peak and prominent Hesperus Mountain, at 13,237 feet elevation, the highest summit of the La Plata Mountains. The trail gradually gets more rough but turning around is possible at any point. There is a loop possible beginning at just over 4 miles or it can be an in-and-out adventure from any point.
