Trail Overview

The Cowboy Lakes ATV trail starts from the south end at the intersection with the West Fork ATV trail and heads north. It's a smooth flowy two-track between spruce trees and aspen trees. It has lots of gradual curves and a bit of loose rock in the trail. It descends down to a shallow creek crossing over the West Fork Cimarron River. The crossing is a bit rocky but super easy in fall, there might be deeper water at other times of the year. From the river, it descends back up for the second half of the trail. Some sections have a bit more embedded rock or loose rock, but the trail remains easy and pretty gradual as it climbs to a beautiful view overlooking the lake and mountains. After 1.5 miles total, the Cowboy Lakes Trail takes a northeast turn to the right on a non-motorized trail toward the dam. Motorized users will need to continue onto the Lou Creek Trail, which is more of a continuation of the two-track.
