Ten Mile Grade - FS 4S004

Trail Overview

This is a historically significant, long single-lane dirt road that is generally easy (Rated 1) but is NOT a through route due to closures. The surface is a mix of packed dirt, embedded rock, and sections of old, broken pavement. The southern end is blocked by the Yosemite Mountain Ranch private property and further complicated by substantial, unbucked blowdown. North of the Dobler Meadow Road intersection, the road devolves into an overgrown ATV-only track. The open sections offer scenic, fast travel to trailheads and campsites.

This is a simple, high-speed single-lane road that requires high clearance only for comfort and to navigate the embedded rock/broken pavement sections. No technical 4WD is necessary for the open portions.

History

Ten Mile Grade is a historic name, typical of early logging and stockman trails created in the 1880s to 1900s for timber extraction and ranching. The road's original purpose was to move resources across the area toward the valley. The modern road is now part of the administrative system, but its original path is fragmented by the private development of Yosemite Mountain Ranch.
