Trail Overview

Volcanoville is a good beginner trail that can be completed by most stock 4x4 SUVs, as well as many AWD vehicles with AT tires and at least 8 inches of clearance. The trail does get progressively more difficult, with plenty of opportunities to turn around safely. Private parcels are well marked and easy to avoid. There is cellular coverage throughout most of the trail.

Difficulty

The trail starts out quite easy, on soft dirt. The dirt becomes rutted, then transitions to loose rock with a few large rocks that can be avoided. The last half mile is where 4WD is needed for poorly maintained steep hills with loose rocks.

Contrary to a previous report, the trail is open.  There are quite a few carelessly-placed “No Trespassing” signs, but it appeared clear to us that they are intended to refer to the properties off of the trail, and not to the trail itself.  There were also a few gates with “No Trespassing” signs, that from a short distance, seemed to be the end of the publicly-accessible trail, but as we got closer, we found that the trail turned one way or another, and continued away from those gates.   At what we assumed to be the official end of the trail, a much weaker trail continued further, but after exploring it a short way on foot, we decided not to pursue it at this time.   We noted the presence of a large RV trailer near this end, but did not look closer to see if it was abandoned, or occupied.  We wondered how anyone managed to get so large a trailer to that location.
