Trail Overview

Red Fir Road is a rugged and scenic off-road route offering an adventurous ascent through dense pine forest and dramatic ridgelines. The trail begins on the north side of Sawmill Cutoff, where you'll spot an orange diamond trail marker labeled with the letter "K". As you climb, the markings occasionally change to an unlettered orange diamond before returning to "K" later on. From the outset, the trail immediately begins its climb, gaining over 800 feet in just three miles. The track is barely one vehicle wide, weaving through tight forest corridors and often teetering along a narrow shelf road with commanding views of the valley below. It's very sandy, and conditions can get rough fast--whoops, deep ruts, hidden humps, and drop-offs are all common due to heavy use by side-by-sides. Although the distance is short, the terrain makes for a slow and technical drive, especially with the numerous bumps and soft surfaces. Keep an eye out for blind crests and dips, especially when ascending at speed. This trail offers a fantastic off-pavement workout for both driver and machine, with tight corners, steep grades, and punchy little features that make it feel longer than it is.

Difficulty

Trail presents a moderate challenge for experienced drivers in high-clearance 4WD vehicles. The combination of deep sand, frequent whoops, off-camber ruts, and hidden drop-offs requires good tires and careful throttle control. Airing down is strongly recommended to smooth out the ride and increase traction on the soft surfaces. The trail's narrow shelf road sections with little room for error also demand attention, especially when climbing or descending tight turns. This is a trail for drivers who are comfortable navigating rough terrain in confined spaces.
