Trail Overview

Silver Knob (FS 6S063) is the unruly cousin to the well-behaved gravel roads of the Miami Mountain system. While trails like Kamook offer a relaxing Sunday drive, Silver Knob demands you put your coffee down and grab the wheel with both hands. This tight, twisty two-track dives into the forest, immediately presenting a surface that is a chaotic mix of loose gravel and natural red dirt. The trail is defined by its verticality and erosion; you aren't just driving forward, you're driving up, down, and sideways through deep, aggressive ruts that have carved their way into the hillside. It's a fun, active drive that forces you to pick lines carefully to keep your differentials off the dirt. The dense tree cover keeps things shady, but also means the trail stays narrow, so keep an eye out for encroaching branches that might want to add some pinstripes to your paint job.

Difficulty

This trail earns its Rating 4 badge thanks to the significant ruts found on the steeper climbing sections. Unlike the smooth feeder roads, Silver Knob features deep, V-notch ruts and cross-axle holes that will thoroughly test your vehicle's suspension articulation and ground clearance. A stock low-clearance vehicle could easily high-center or scrape bumpers here. The steep climbs on loose dirt add a traction challenge, often requiring 4WD Low to maintain momentum without spinning tires and digging the ruts even deeper. It's a technical step up that requires a capable rig and an attentive driver.
