SC88 Loop

Trail Overview

Starting at BLM SC65 and crossing BLM LA2 and BLM SC82 South twice, this loop heads directly for the Eastern Sierra Mountains before circling back eastward at the Kiavah Wilderness Area border. Soft sand with some gravel forms the surface on this one vehicle wide route surrounded by desert flora and seasonal wildflowers. The trail is relatively flat overall, with one small hill approaching the mountains. Deep ruts off to the side can be bypassed, while washboards and off-camber sections all under 18 inches appear throughout. Some sand gets slightly deeper in places. The middle section gets more challenging with deeper ruts and rocks up to 18 inches deep, creating the crux. Fine sand makes this very dusty, reducing visibility significantly.

Those deep ruts off to the side require awareness, even if bypassed. Soft sand getting slightly deeper, combined with fine sand, creates very dusty conditions, adding difficulty. All obstacles staying under 18 inches mean clearance limits, but are still demanding. One vehicle width leaves no margin for error in the challenging middle section. Four wheel drive and high clearance are essential for that technical middle stretch.
