Napoleon Canyon Road - FS 32092

Trail Overview

This 7-mile out-and-back route begins at Golden Gate Road and drops more than 900 feet while climbing under 300 feet in just over 3 miles. The trail follows a ridge line high above Golden Gate Road and Highway 395, offering wide views of the Nevada mountains across the valley. The surface is mostly hard-packed dirt with many embedded rocks. You'll also see clear reminders of past wildfires in the ghost forest that lines much of the route. To the west is the Slinkard/Little Antelope Wildlife Area and Carson-Iceberg Wilderness. The trail is in the Toiyabe National Forest. Sagebrush and weeds often crowd the trail edges and median. The drive includes light off-camber stretches, small rocks to navigate, and a handful of natural whoops. Around 1.25 miles in, you'll run a shelf road with steep drop-offs to the valley below, where speed control is essential. At mile 3.3, the character changes as the surface becomes sandier with deeper ruts and more off-camber. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended in this section. Eventually, the trail enters an open meadow lined with grasses and sparse burnt trees. Here, the road smooths out, though it can still feel bumpy in places. The trail ends at a locked gate overlooking Napoleon Canyon. Despite its name, Napoleon Canyon itself lies about 1,200 feet below to the west, making "Napoleon Canyon Ridgeline" a more fitting description.
