Trail Overview
This 8-mile out-and-back trail starts at the June Lake Scenic Loop and wraps around the east side of Grant Lake, offering a chance to experience the beauty of Grant Lake up close. You'll pass two open gates within the first mile that are typically unlocked unless utility work is being done. The track starts off as a very wide, gravel, graded trail managed by LADWP, but right before mile 1, the trail splits off and narrows dramatically to about one vehicle wide with lots of small embedded rocks. The trail rewards you with stunning views of Grant Lake and the Eastern Sierra mountains throughout the journey. Various short spur trails branch off to explore the lake further, where you can fish, boat, and swim. The trail can be very busy, especially on weekends, so be aware of incoming traffic since it's one vehicle wide, though there are passing pull-outs available. Be cautious of your speed as there is some slight shelf road with a drop-off toward the lake. Be aware of fire restrictions that typically go into effect during the summer to early fall months.

Difficulty
Most of the trail earns a 1 or 2 rating, but rock obstacles and deep whoops at the very end bring the overall rating to 3. There can be washboards depending on the time of year. A high clearance vehicle is not required, but you may scrub on some of the sand in the middle or some of the rock obstacles if you're not careful.
History
Grant Lake's history is defined by the 1930s Mono Basin Project, which saw the City of Los Angeles construct the Grant Lake Dam to divert water from Rush Creek into the Los Angeles Aqueduct. This project transformed the natural lake into a reservoir, creating a 1,100-acre lake and a boom in the area as workers were brought in to build the dam and tunnel. The lake's deep waters are now home to a popular trout and brown trout fishery, while its size and depth also make it suitable for water sports like water skiing and wakeboarding.
