Trail Overview

Big Spring Spur Road is a scenic dirt route in the Toiyabe National Forest, accessed from Highway 89, about 7.5 miles west of the Highway 395/89 Junction. This rugged path takes you through open meadows, rolling ridgelines, and offers striking views of the surrounding mountain ranges. The road surface is dirt with many embedded rocks, and although not technically difficult, portions are quite bumpy and require slower speeds. Several deep ruts from runoff line the shoulders, especially in the narrower sections, and may require smart line choices to avoid damage. The trail ends just before the AT&T communications facility, and travelers should not continue past this point due to private property concerns on the connecting Electronic Site Road that descends to Highway 395. This is a quiet, picturesque route with wildflowers in season and sweeping vistas in every direction--perfect for those looking for solitude just off the highway. The nearest fuel is at Topaz Lake, along Highway 395.

Difficulty

While much of the trail is Rating 2, the presence of deep runoff ruts, embedded rock, and a consistently uneven surface increases the challenge. High clearance and 4WD are strongly recommended, especially after weather events. Drivers should be prepared for slow, rocky stretches that may require precise wheel placement. Aggressive all-terrain tires are a must for peace of mind.
