Trail Overview

This trail starts on FS 3N35, climbing up onto a hill of tall pine trees on a narrow path that is a mix of loose rock and soft dirt. There are lots of small, loose, volcanic-looking rocks as it goes through grassy and dry hillsides. It winds through the sparse forest, with very gradual curves and small drop-offs from the embedded roots. A lot of the forest has been cleared, so there are large log piles on the sides of the trail and a lot of fallen pine needles. Watch out for a lot of stick debris in sections where downed logs have been cut. The southern segment of the trail is the hardest part, as there's a bit more loose rock on a steep descent, where it's a bit more rutted with small drop-offs. It ends on FS Road 4N02 on the southern end. This trail is seasonally closed 12/16 - 4/14 to motorized use.

Difficulty

Despite a few very small drop offs from roots and rocks, and a steep and loose descent on the south end, this trail is pretty easy and manageable for less experienced riders. This is considered "Moderate" by the Forest Service.

Access Description

This trail system in the Stanislaus National Forest can be accessed from either the Deer Creek Staging Area on the west side of the trail system or from Crandall Campground on the east side of the trail system. The Deer Creek Staging Area is a primitive dirt lot with space for several vehicles and small trailers, accessed via Italian Bar Road. The Crandall OHV Parking and Camping Area has several primitive camp spots with picnic tables. All of the trails are open from April 15 to December 15, but it gets really hot and dry in the summer here, so the best times to visit are spring and fall.
