Trail Overview
Get ready for an epic adventure on the Verde Sunflower Trail! This trail takes you through the stunning Tonto National Forest on Forest Road 393 and loops into the southern end of the Mazatzal Wilderness. No permit is needed - just bring your sense of adventure! The 14-mile trail follows 500 kV transmission lines and offers a mix of rocky sections and sandy washes, perfect for those who love variety. You'll enjoy breathtaking views of Bartlett Reservoir, rocky outcrops, ridges, springs, creeks, and Mother Nature's erosion masterpieces. Keep an eye out for mule deer, javelina, coyotes, and occasionally bobcats and mountain lions. You'll also see desert tortoises, lizards, snakes, and birds like Gambel's quail and red-tailed hawks. Typically driven from Sycamore Road to the Log Corral Trail, you can also go the other way if you prefer. From Sycamore Road, the trail starts easy with a technical rating of 2, gets rockier with a rating of 3, and becomes more challenging with a rating of 4 as you progress. The final stretch is sandy with washouts and gullies to test the limits of your suspension. A stock Wrangler without lockers can easily handle this trail. A full-width truck could negotiate the trail, but it would be challenging and is not recommended. Watch for washouts because some shelf road washouts narrow the trail, but they're manageable if you're alert. Shelf roads are wide enough for a comfortable drive. Enjoy the adventure and the stunning desert scenery!

Difficulty
Most of the trail is easily negotiated, but it is important to watch out for washouts on some areas of shelf roads. The trail has a variety of terrain, including dirt, loose rocks, and sandy areas with significant erosion. There is a creek crossing that is usually only inches deep but may flow more heavily after rains.
