Trail Overview

Trail 1007 is a two-track route that winds through the landscape with rocky stretches, dips, and several off-camber sections. Near Solomon Pass, the trail features a steep ascent and descent over loose rock, which may require careful tire placement and a high-clearance vehicle. The route runs alongside the fence line of the Safford copper mine, with clear signage indicating that the land beyond the fence is private property. Trail 1007 offers sweeping views of the surrounding terrain and serves as a connector between Soloman Pass and the Safford-Morenci Trail. There are no dispersed campsites along this route, and it lacks basic amenities such as trash disposal and a water source. Cell service may be limited in some areas.

History

The Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area, established in 1990 and managed by the BLM, protects 23,000 acres of rare desert riparian habitat in southeastern Arizona. Centered around a scenic canyon formed by the Gila River, the area has a rich history of Indigenous use, Spanish exploration, and early American ranching. It was designated to preserve its diverse ecosystems--home to over 200 bird species, beavers, and native fish--alongside cultural sites and historic homesteads. Today, it offers recreation like rafting, hiking, and birdwatching while safeguarding a vital stretch of river in the desert.
