Trail Overview

The Pinal Pioneer Pole Line East, which runs parallel to the east side of Pioneer Parkway (also known as Highway 79), is an excellent access route for those looking to visit the Tom Mix monument and rest area. This roundabout provides a smooth drive suitable for highway vehicles. However, be aware that the rest area lacks services such as restrooms--it's primarily a shaded spot with tables and trash cans for enjoying lunch and taking in the views. As you travel along this trail, you'll find it meanders along and beneath the telephone lines, zigzagging through the terrain. Keep your eyes peeled for plenty of iconic Arizona saguaro and cholla cacti lining the route. Be cautious when crossing sandy washes;they can become impassable during monsoon season, transforming into swift water channels to be avoided. Once you reach the southern end at Freeman Road, you can continue south along the pole line toward a private ranch or head east on Freeman Road into the mountains. This trail is generally easy, providing ample room to pull over and allow oncoming traffic to pass. Important Note: Cellular service can be spotty throughout the trail, so it's wise to download offline maps before your journey. Remember that this trail also traverses Arizona State Land Trust territory, requiring a valid permit that you should purchase and print online beforehand. Always be prepared with plenty of water and supplies for your desert adventure! Enjoy the ride!
