Trail Overview

This is a short loop off of the North Fork East Fork Black River Canyon trail (276). The loop starts at the Oscar Shultz gravesite. The attraction to this short loop besides seeing the rustic grave of Oscar is that it encircles meadows where elk are often grazing. This loop is an easy sight worthy diversion while travelling other tracks in the area.

Difficulty

Most of the trail is quite easy but may contain mud and water holes during wet seasons. High clearance is recommended for the occasional ruts and obstacles that may be scattered along the trail although four wheel drive will not be needed at most times.

History

The history of Oscar Shultz is interesting. He was born in Germany and because his mother still in Germany needed money, Oscar thought being an outlaw was the best way to get money. He was shot by a posse after his robbery of the McNary bank. The posse attempted to bring Oscar's body back but after a few days on horses in warm May weather, the body began to deteriorate and Oscar was buried at the location leading to the loop.
