Trail Overview

This trail is found in the Barry Goldwater Bombing Range, Sand Tank Mountain Area A. A permit is required and easily obtained for free at Luke.isportman.net. Check-in and check-out can easily be done on the same website. This trail takes off from Vekol Road and winds behind Maricopa Peak, Javelina Mountain, and Round Butte. It is a fairly easy and scenic trail. It crosses numerous washes. On certain days, if you're lucky, you might see military aircraft flying from the Luke, Yuma Marine, and Davis Monthan Air Force Bases. There are lots of wildlife. The trail ends close to I-8 near Gila Bend.

There are some short ledges and sandy washes.

History

This was a bombing and gunnery practice range during WWII. Most of the range has been turned into a recreational area. A small portion of the range is still used and it is not accessible to the public-signs are up.

Access Description

Leave Gila Bend headed east or Casa Grande headed west on I-8 and take Exit 144 for Vekol Road. Take Sonoran Desert 8009 to the Javelina Trail.
