Trail Overview

FH1068 is an out-and-back shelf road that follows the eastern side of the mountain, offering expansive views of Mount Graham. The trail is a narrow gravel and dirt road with unavoidable pinstriping from overgrown vegetation. Watch for cattle and oncoming traffic, especially on blind hills and tight curves. The trail is lined with dense prickly pear cactus in a desert landscape mixed with pine and juniper trees. Green moss-covered rocks are common along the route. Road conditions include loose dirt with rocks ranging from 6 inches to 12 inches, and the trail can become impassable in bad weather. At the first Y-intersection, turn left to climb a steep, heavily rutted hill with 12-inch rocks extending all the way to the top. At the top, you will reach another Y--stay right to climb a technical rock ledge. High-clearance 4x4 is required, and use of 4-Low, proper wheel placement, and a spotter is strongly recommended. From this point forward, the remainder of the trail is the most technical, featuring steep climbs, off-camber sections, and rock ledges. A large water tank sits near the top, with cattle commonly found in the area. The trail then follows the fence line bordering the San Carlos Reservation, delivering stunning, wide-open views in all directions.
