EC1195

Trail Overview

This out-and-back trail starts on EC1191 at the top of a plateau and quickly starts dropping into the canyon along a shelf road. The terrain quickly transitions from rocks to sand as you descend. The trail drops into a wash and goes for a short distance before eventually coming out and climbing through a series of windy, small hills. The area is mostly barren except for sparse desert bushes and is littered with many seasonal wildflowers that add color to the landscape. As you continue climbing, you end up back on top of the plateau, surrounded by a flat area with hard-packed sand and embedded rocks. Many mountain ranges surround you in the distance, including the Trigo Mountains, creating panoramic views. There are lots of opportunities for dispersed camping in this area. Be on the lookout for a few off-camber sections with some holes to watch out for along the route. The trail ends at the border of the Yuma Proving Grounds as part of the Department of Defense.

Difficulty

The shelf road descent along the cliff edge with off-camber sections requires careful navigation and respect for the exposure. The transition from rocks to sand and back demands adjustment in driving approach. The holes scattered along the route are hazards to avoid. The windy, small hills and wash sections add variety but aren't overly technical. High clearance is recommended for this route.
