Trail Overview
Trail 51001 winds through the mountains on a smooth gravel route with a wide, easy-to-follow track. The trail is lined mostly with desert creosote bushes with scattered pine trees appearing as elevation changes through the hills. Along the route, you'll pass a windmill and several small offshoot trails, most of which end quickly and do not reconnect. The drive offers open desert and mountain views with gentle elevation changes before the south side of the trail turns into 51007, which goes to the Placerita Gulch.

History
Placerita Gulch in Arizona has roots tied to the state's early mining and prospecting era. The name "placer" comes from placer mining, a method used by miners to separate gold from loose gravel and sediment found in washes and stream beds. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, prospectors explored gulches and canyons throughout central Arizona searching for gold deposits carried down by seasonal floods and erosion. Like many remote Arizona gulches, Placerita Gulch became part of a network of primitive mining routes connecting camps, claims, and supply roads through rugged desert terrain. Small-scale mining activity and exploration took place throughout the area, though many operations remained short-lived due to limited water, difficult terrain, and fluctuating gold prices. Today, the gulch is known more for its remote scenery, old mining traces, desert vegetation, and backcountry access routes that still reflect Arizona's historic mining past.
