Trail Overview

Trail 47029 begins at the top of the hill off Trail 47030. The route opens with relatively easy terrain and offers scenic views of the lake to the north and Highway 74 to the south. The surrounding area includes dispersed campsites, numerous saguaros, and dense cactus patches. Travelers should use caution around cholla cactus along the early northwest-trending section. Approximately 0.5 miles in, the trail encounters a steep, rocky climb with sections of washed-out track. High-clearance vehicles are required, and conditions can deteriorate significantly after rain. After the main descent, a short off-camber hill leads into a wash. Once in the wash, the trail turns left and continues toward the underpass tunnel beneath Castle Hot Springs Road. The tunnel can be used to exit the route, with the left side providing the easiest passage (approximately 6-10 inches of concrete wall to navigate). The original exit has been fenced off, so returning to Highway 74 is the alternative if not using the tunnel. Overall, 47029 is a dirt trail with loose rock, a long off-camber rock-garden hill, and several rutted sections. While not highly technical, it requires careful driving and a properly equipped high-clearance vehicle.

This trail can become washed out after rain, with ruts and off-camber sections as it descends toward the wash. A few additional wash crossings may be challenging and could require careful wheel placement. High-clearance 4WD is recommended.
