Trail Overview

Riva Ridge Road is mostly large rip rap and large loose rock. There are nice scenic views overlooking Sumner Strait. At the top of this road there are several tarns with multiple hiking trails. There are three different hiking trail heads from this road near the tarns, and two trail heads have multiple trails connected. There is a small parking area or campsite area at the Last Tarn between the last two hiking trailheads. This road has dense forested areas. A lot of Bear signs on the road. A little more than halfway up the road is a spur road that has one spot suitable for camping at the midpoint. There is a lot of wildlife in this area. Be safety minded as there are Brown Bear, Black Bear, Deer, and Porcupines in this area. Driving on the road, you can see obvious signs of a Bear. Weather plays a part in the level of difficulty as this is in a rainforest, so be mindful of potential washouts. There are sections of loose rock and parts of the road have drop offs where there is a gain in elevation. There are great views of Sumner Strait, dense trees with windy roads, and Tarns. Tall grass, ferns, a variety of trees, devils club, lichens, moss and flowers can be seen along the road. Views: Scenic landscapes and views of Sumner Strait. There is one dry camping spot at the end of this road. There isn't much room for a turnaround at the end and it is not advisable to bring trailers on this road due to narrow roads and no good turnarounds. Warnings: Keep on the road, drop off areas. Watch for signs of road deterioration or washouts due to heavy rainfall. Be mindful of wildlife, especially Bears. No cell service noted. Check weather conditions and be prepared for rain, fog with low visibility, and lower temperatures. It is a rainforest. Suggested best time of year: June - October. Note: This road is a down and back.
